According to an article by Doug Irving at the Daily Breeze, SpaceX is consolidating its operations in a larger facility in Hawthorne, California, a couple miles up the road from its present facility in El Segundo. There's not much detail in the article about the location or attributes of the Hawthorne facility. Hopefully, the mayor of Hawthorne was a little too optimistic (or at least a little too forward-thinking) when he said that, given SpaceX's growth, that it could soon have "thousands of people in Hawthorne." I was rather hoping that the company could get the job done with a smaller scale of operations.
I noted with interest that Hawthorne didn't give the company any incentives for the move. However, Elon Musk stated that he has "rarely felt more loved."
Looking at a map of the area, Hawthorne isn't near barge access. Perhaps this location precludes SpaceX from building rockets with a greater diameter than is accepted on the freight rail system. Hey, I have the horse's ass firmly in view! ;-)
In any event, this seems like a good time to do the move. Even if SpaceX doesn't successfully launch a single rocket -- heaven forbid -- it may, subject to the whims of the congress, collect $199 million from NASA over the next 2 years. This gives the company lots of flexibility in some respects. SpaceX probably could survive even with 3 initial failures of the Falcon 1.
