Jim Maser Moves to Rocketdyne

According to a Pratt & Whitney press release, Jim Maser, the current President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX, is being hired as President of Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, the rocket propulsion shop.  Maser was with SpaceX for only about 9 months, and I wonder what prompted him to make the move.  By way of background, recently Rocketdyne was acquired by United Technologies for $700 million, so Rocketdyne would represent at least a slight move up the current space business hierarchy.  However, I have the sense that SpaceX would be a more rewarding employer for an aerospace engineer of high ambition.

As far as I can recall, this move is notable as the first and only major defection from SpaceX.

My guess is that the majors are spending a shitload of money trying to poach Musk's key engineers. Pretty much the same thing that Microsoft did to Borland in the 90's.

Either that, or he's finally realised that SpaceX don't have a clue about what they're doing.

Adrasteia: Yeh, poaching key employees is standard fare in the IT industry. I note that Musk has done his share of this in building SpaceX, so turnabout is fair play.

dr: With Maser, probably what happened is that he was being recruited to PWR before he signed on to SpaceX. PWR eventually arranged its succession, and Maser evaluated it at that point. I won't be worried until and if the propulsion team suffers more than one key defection.
